     Imagine a world full of hate and devoid of love for anything except the government. Imagine a world where the government controls all aspects of humanity, including the past. This is the world George Orwell depicts in his novel 1984. In 1984 Big Brother and The Party control every aspect of the lives of the citizens of Oceania. Winston Smith, a citizen of Oceania, is a secret enemy of this government. He rebels against The Party in several ways, among which is his affair with Julia, a young member of the Anti-Sex League who Winston eventually finds also supports his cause.

     The relationship between love and hate is continuously depicted throughout this novel. We see this relationship clash a number of times in 1984. First is Winston’s relationship with Julia with whom he falls deeply in love after only a short time mainly for his desperate need for someone to support his beliefs.
