William Frederick Cody… A.K.A "Buffalo Bill." This man was born in Scott County, Iowa, in 1846. His father died in 1857. After his death Cody and his mother moved to Kansas where he worked for a wagon- freight company as a mounted messenger and wrangler. Bill also tried his luck in the gold rush run of 1859 where he then led on to risk his life working in the Pony Express. He was only 14 when starting this job and these riders risked their lives every time they rode. After living threw that Cody must have thought he needed more risk in his life so he joined the army in the civil war. In 1863 he enlisted in the Seventh Kansas Cavalry. And finally in 1867, Bill took up the trade that gave him his nickname, hunting buffalo to feed the construction crews of the Kansas Pacific Railroad.
